Mitsubishi Global Small Concept
Recently, Mitsubishi allowed us behind the scenes to shoot these first photos of its all-new Global Small Concept, which makes its debut at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show this week. If the new Colt looks like this, Mitsubishi could be onto something.Seen as Mitsubishi's new bread-and-better car, company white coats tell us that the new five-door combines compact size with affordability and fuel efficiency in a sharp package.
Seating five adults, the new compact employs either a 1.0- or 1.2-liter liter gas engine with a regenerative braking system and idle-stop mechanism that creates CO2 emissions "in the mid-90 g/km range," according to one Mitsu engineer. To enhance the car's environmental and economical capabilities, engineers have penned a sleeker, slipperier exterior profile, significantly trimmed weight on the powertrain, chassis, and body, and improved the efficiency of the engine and its new CVT while optimizing brake and tire settings.
It's slated to be built at the company's new factory in Thailand, and Mitsubishi says we can expect to see the production version in European showrooms by March 2012. While no official word has come yet from Mitsu, we expect a version of the Global Small concept to be built here in the U.S. at Mitsubishi's plant in Illinois as part of the automaker's previously announced reorganization of that facility. Previous generations of the Colt were produced at the automaker's U.S. plant.
